Protection Switching and Rerouting in MPLS

چکیده
Multi-protocol Label Switching (MPLS) has become an attractive technology of choice for Internet backbone service providers. MPLS recovery mechanisms are increasing in popularity because they can guarantee fast restoration and high QoS assurance. To provide dependable services MPLS networks make use of a set of procedures (detection, notification and fault recovery) which seek to ensure appropriate protection for the traffic carried in the label switched paths (LSPs). When a fault happens in the active LSP, the recovery scheme must redirect the traffic to a recovery path (the protection LSP or recovery LSP) which bypasses the fault. The two basic recovery models used to redirect traffic are rerouting and protection switching. Protection switching is faster than rerouting but cannot handle simultaneous faults in the active and the recovery path. On the other hand, rerouting is generally slow, and cannot offer QoS guaranties upon failure, but can use resources in a more efficient way.

Multiprotocol Label Switching (MPLS) is a label based switching technique initiated by Internet Engineering Task Force to bring the speed of layer 2 switching to layer 3. Its label based switching technique allows routers to make the forwarding decision based on the contents of label instead of performing a complex route lookup table. Furthermore it allows explicit routing to overcome links and...
متن کاملBuilding Reliable MPLS Networks Using a Path Protection Mechanism
It is expected that MPLS-based recovery could become a viable option for obtaining faster restoration than layer 3 rerouting. To deliver reliable service, however, MPLS requires a set of procedures to provide protection for the traffic carried on the label switched paths. In this article we propose a path protection mechanism that is simple, scalable, fast, and efficient. We describe in detail ...
متن کاملAn Efficient Rerouting Scheme for MPLS-Based Recovery and Its Performance Evaluation
The path recovery in MPLS is the technique to reroute traffic around a failure or congestion in a LSP. Currently, there are two kinds of model for path recovery: rerouting and protection switching. The existing schemes based on rerouting model have the disadvantage of more difficulty in handling node failures or concurrent node faults. Similarly, the existing schemes based on protection switchi...
متن کاملA Review on Various Fast Reroute Schemes for Traffic Protection Mechanisms in MPLS
For a perfect network it must have ability to keep all the tasks and services running even when a link or node fails. This feature of any network is usually known as network resilience. The basic working of resilient network is that it can recover from a failure by automatically diverting the traffic from the failed portion of the network to another active part of the network. This process must...

This document describes how Resource ReserVation Protocol (RSVP) PathErr messages may be used to trigger rerouting of Multi-Protocol Label Switching (MPLS) and Generalized MPLS (GMPLS) point-to-point Traffic Engineering (TE) Label Switched Paths (LSPs) without first removing LSP state or resources. Such LSP rerouting may be desirable in a number of cases, including, for example, soft-preemption...
